In Ho Chi Minh City, the Venerable Thich Quang Duc Monument is a memorial to the Buddhist monk’s last act of bravery in the face of religious discrimination. He set himself on fire in the middle of a busy road to protest Ngo Dinh Diem’s killing of Buddhists. A memorial shows him surrounded by flames and standing in front of a bas-relief to honor the act. The Venerable Thich Quang Duc Monument was built as a memorial in 2010 near the same corner where he set himself on fire. This was done to honor him and remind people of what a brave thing he did.

On the right side, at the outer perimeter, there are some murals about the journey of Gautama Buddha. Behind the statue, there’s a stone carving summarizing the events that led to Thich Quang Duc’s sacrifice. If you cross the road, there is also a small altar of Thich Quang Duc where you may offer incense.
