About Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, TX 79905

The 55-acre park is home to a U.S.-Mexico border museum & an amphitheater, plus a visitors center.

The memorial park serves primarily as a cultural center and contains art galleries, a theater, and an amphitheater. A museum, which details the history of the U.S.–Mexico border, is located inside the visitor center. 

The park honors the peaceful resolution of the Chamizal dispute, a more than 100-year border dispute between the United States and Mexico that resulted from the natural change of course of the Rio Grande between the cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. This national memorial was established on part of the disputed land that was assigned to the United States according to the Chamizal Convention of 1963; a corresponding Parque Público Federal El Chamizal was created on the now-Mexican portion of the land. 

The Chamizal Convention was negotiated by the International Boundary and Water Commission, which was established in 1889 to maintain the border, and pursuant to later treaties to allocate river waters between the two nations, and provide for flood control and water sanitation.

The National Memorial was authorized on June 30, 1966. It was established as a National Park Service unit on February 4, 1974, and was administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places the same day.

• Beautiful memorial that’s part of the National Park System. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, gorgeous grounds, and a view of the bridge to Mexico just outside. Trails are lovely and a great place to picnic.
• Great, free, educational park on the border. The park rangers were friendly, helpful, and informative. This stop was a lot better than I expected.
• I believe that the Chamizal National Monument is a historic landmark that should be appreciated and preserved for all times in El Paso because it bears a lot of significance, especially between the agreements that have been made in the past by previous US and Mexican leaders, and it represents a very important bond between the United States and Mexico, which should always be honored.
• Really wonderful little museum to complement this historic urban park. I was surprised to see such great exhibits. The ranger working, Danielle, greeted me and introduced me to the exhibits. She was incredibly friendly, helpful, and approachable. I even bought some souvenirs at the gift shop.
• Outstanding staff! Super knowledgeable and very friendly. Saul mostly walked us around. Another lady helped with human abs; they were great at giving us not only knowledge of the park but also great recommendations of places to try in and around El Paso.
• We were considering skipping this on our trip, but I am glad we did not. Not only was the visitor’s center informative and interesting, but the park was a perfect place to relax. What really made this a five-star experience were the park rangers and employees who were very friendly and taught us a lot of new information. We were having a rough morning, but their kindness made our day.
