About Tranquillity Park in Houston, TX 77002

Named after the Sea of Tranquility, the city park features flowing water & structural elements.

Tranquility Park is a park located in Downtown Houston, Texas, between Walker and Rusk Streets, and west of Smith Street, with the United States federal courts building for the Southern District of Texas on one side and Houston City Hall on the other. It takes its name, notably differing in spelling, from the Sea of Tranquility, where man first landed on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission on July 20, 1969. First opening to visitors in the summer of 1979, Tranquility Park was officially dedicated on the tenth anniversary of the historic lunar landing. On bronze plaques placed along the main entrance, the first words transmitted by Neil Armstrong from the Moon, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed,” is written in 15 languages. A replica of one of the footprints left on the Moon by Neil Armstrong is also on display inside the park.

Each year, Tranquillity Park hosts many city functions, art shows, and events such as the Children’s Festival and the Houston International Festival. The park is also popular with downtown office workers seeking a shady spot to picnic during their lunch hour. In the northern part of the park, actually a smaller park across the street, there are two memorials, one for each Space Shuttle disaster.

• I really enjoy tranquility parks. I like the whole environment around here and along the Buffalo Bayou. This location is fantastic and suitable for everyone. Despite what Hurricane Harvey did, the city will do whatever it takes to care for it and keep it looking lovely and beautiful. Walking, jogging, and biking are all activities that both young and old can enjoy. Many people walk their dogs. As a temp worker from Pacesetter, I used to work with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, and several of us went to help clean up after Harvey. Overall, I appreciated the task and the traveling around looking for locations to clean up.
• It was beautiful downtown and very clean, but there were lots of homeless people, which took away from being excited for the holidays a little. Lots of family down there, but I saw no police, which was strange with this being a major downtown city.
• I went to share in the excitement of the Astros winning the championship. There were tons of people, but it was amazing.
• Tranquility Park is a great place to go for any family activities or if you just want to grab lunch to go and eat there.
• This is a lovely park in Houston, located right on the edge of downtown on the west side of town. It has beautiful views and is next to the highway, and you can see a lot of stunning sights, including some of my favorite buildings in Houston, which are over here on the west side of downtown. So it’s really a perfect park for looking at views of the great buildings. However, it’s rundown, full of homeless people, and not kept very clean.
