About Hermann Square in Houston, TX 77002

Various events are held at this public square with a rectangular reflecting pool & green space.

Surrounded on three sides by great towers of glass, steel, and stone Houston’s City Hall building has all the aspirations of grandeur that its neighbors have, but it simply lacks the height. Depending on your point of view, City Hall is nearly identical to dozens of other city halls built in the southwest during the same time period. Most are constructed with the same Texas Cordova limestone. The front of the building steps down to a small park dominated by a reflecting pool. Hermann Square is not fancy but achieves a simple elegance. This is fortunate since the park is used nearly daily for festivals, protests, and concerts. To accommodate larger events, the reflecting pool is planked over and tents are erected. All of these public events so close to the seat of power have the reassuring effect of making the city’s government seem more like a partner in everyday life than a dictating authority.

If you visit Houston, Texas, and are looking for a tourist attraction, you might want to check out Hermann Square. This place has been around for years and is known for its good service and landscapes. Hermann Square is a great place to visit with friends and family.

What do people say about Hermann Square in Houston, Texas 77002?

  • I’ve been to high school for countless events. Most recently, there was Reggae Fest. The most memorable was the George Floyd rally. Great place downtown where people can hang out, bring the family, and experience Houston culture when they have events.
  • Very underrated part of downtown Houston, with City Hall right there. It is amazing to visit this square during Christmas with all of its festive lights. Regardless, some spectacular views of the Houston skyline and a pretty reflection pool
  • It’s a nice area to get away from downtown life and chill a bit. Good tree shade areas and big fountains. Very dark at night, and nice uplights on the trees!
  • One of the central locations for Houston’s many annual festivals and parades A fair amount of green space and a reflecting pool are adjacent to city hall, the Houston Public Library, and the historical Julia Ideson building, home of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center. Lunchtime on weekdays usually finds the park surrounded by food trucks and, on select days, lined with farmer’s markets and other vendor tents.
  • This park is awesome! It looks like it has more than a hundred thousand lights all over the park, and it also has a giant Christmas tree in the center of the park. These Christmas lights are sponsored by Reliant Energy. This park is a great place for family gatherings and picture-taking because it is unique and has historical value.
  • Nice place to walk and have some rest from work. This area has some homeless people, but they are not harmful or treat anybody badly. They just want to rest and get their food. HPD has a continuous presence there, in addition to downtown safety workers. There’s always activity there.
