About Waugh Drive Bat Colony in Houston, TX 77002

Located in: Buffalo Bayou Park
Viewing spot to watch thousands of wild bats emerge from under the bridge at sunset.
Nestled among the lush green vegetation of Buffalo Bayou Park, Waugh Drive Bridge rests over Buffalo Bayou, less than two miles west of Downtown Houston. The bat flights are amazing, winding along the bayou or through the skyscrapers across downtown. An estimated 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats call the bridge home. The bat population fluctuates through the year, with a peak in the summer and early fall. A large population of bats continues to reside on the bridge through the winter months, resulting in awesome emergences on warm winter evenings. Upon emerging at sunset, the bats usually fly east along the bayou before dispersing. The best bat-viewing locations are:
The viewing platform at the southeast corner of the bayou bank, next to the bridge (along Allen Parkway);
The northeast bank of the bayou, near the bridge (near Memorial Drive);
On the east rail sidewalk of the bridge itself, looking directly down into the bayou channel.

What do people say about Waugh Drive Bat Colony in Houston, Texas 77002?

  • It was my first time seeing the bat colony, and it was also my niece’s first time ever seeing wild bats. It was awesome and had an amazing, spectacular view. We came at twilight, and it was stunning to see all the bats flying around and about freely. The bat poop smell is strong, so I don’t suggest going under the bridge. On the bright side, no bugs!
  • Parking was a little tricky. Watching them from the bridge was better than from the platform. Definitely smell them before you get there. Very interesting to observe. There were several herons there trying to catch a bat for a meal, but we never saw them have any success.
  • It was a great experience to be able to see the natural phenomenon of hundreds of thousands of bats leaving their nesting area under the bridge and flying out into the night in search of insects to eat. It’s well worth checking out if you’re interested in nature and bats.
  • The wind picked up this evening when we went out, so the grand exit of the bats was not so stunning. It is an experience, though. Several people stopped to ask what was happening. The bat colony is known, but not ubiquitously. Please don’t block the bayou path when going to see this incredible sight because that’s where you can watch the bats leave the bridge.
  • I went to see the bats. There was free parking, the park is very long, and you’ll see a lot of people on their bikes or running. It has some spots to sit down and have a picnic, and I recommend bringing something to sit on. The best place to see them is where the signs are.
