About Franklin Mountains State Park in El Paso, TX 79930
24,247 acres of scenic desert offering climbing, hiking, wildlife, camping & views.
Franklin Mountains State Park is a Texas state park in El Paso, Texas, that protects the Franklin Mountains. Park headquarters are located at an elevation of 5,426 feet (1,654 m), with the highest peak, North Franklin Mountain, reaching 7,192 feet (2,192 m). It is one of the largest urban parks in the nation, lying completely within city limits and covering 24,247.56 acres (9,813 ha). It is open year-round for recreational hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, scenic driving, and vistas.
The climate type of this area belongs to the hot-summer Mediterranean climate, which is close to the cold semi-arid climate. Unlike the desert climate of downtown El Paso, the national park is located at a higher altitude in the mountains, which can intercept a large amount of moisture from the air, thereby forming precipitation.
A part of the Chihuahuan Desert, the plants and wildlife found in the park, despite it being within a city, are typical of those found throughout the rest of the desert. Barrel cactus, yucca, and Mexican and California poppies are common plants. Trees like cottonwood, hackberry, juniper, and oak grow along the springs on the mountain slopes. Mammals in the park include mule deer, mountain lions, ring-tailed cats, and a variety of rodents. Birds observed at the park included golden eagles, owls, hawks, and a wide variety of smaller birds.

What do people say about Franklin Mountains State Park in El Paso, Texas 79930?
- With so many trails, picnic areas, and beautiful nature, it is one of the best places to get away from the city within the city limits.
- I visited a few weeks ago, just for a picnic lunch and to enjoy the surroundings. I was very impressed with the cleanliness, and I noticed the park ranger was consistently making so many rounds, which made me feel safe.
- A great place to catch a sunset if you are camping and don’t need to leave the park by 5 p.m. when the gates close!
- There is nothing like enjoying our beautiful mountains and the amazing views and variety of flowers that they offer.
- Nice park, great views, nice welcome center/gift shop. Some of the trails are too rocky and a bit confusing. I wish there were better markings and even distant markers. The staff was excellent.
- Unexpectedly awesome. I didn’t have any expectations after visiting other state parks. Usually, state parks are smaller and do not offer long hikes. We did the Summit Trail in the morning and the Aztec Cave Trail in the afternoon. The Summit Trail had awesome 360-degree views of the whole town, but the hike was somewhat hard. It was hot, but we started early in the morning, so we got heat on the way back. After doing this trail, our energy was low, so we decided on a shorter trail and chose the Aztec Cave Trail. Call it a mistake or call us lucky, we had all the trail to ourselves; there was no one on the trail, but this hike was way steeper, though very short. We enjoyed both trails. The staff at the visitor center is awesome and very friendly.
