About El Paso Museum of History in TX 79901

The El Paso Museum of History (EPMH) is one of three city-operated museums along with the El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Museum of Archaeology. EPMH was established in 1974 as the Cavalry Museum, but quickly served a scope and purpose beyond its title and began to serve as a local and regional history museum. The name of the museum was officially changed to the El Paso Museum of History in 1980.

In 2000, people in El Paso were eager to learn more about El Paso’s role in Texas history and show it off. In that year, voters in El Paso passed a bond election that gave $6.5 million to build a new two-story, 44,000-square-foot history museum in the city’s downtown Cultural Arts District. On June 16, 2007, the city opened the new museum.

The El Paso Museum of History serves the largest continuous border metroplex in North America, which includes El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Together, these two cities are home to close to three million people.

The El Paso Museum of History (EPMH) offers excellent educational benefits to the community. EPMH introduces visitors to the significance of the rich multicultural and multinational history of the border region known as El Paso del Norte (The Pass of the North). Through exhibitions and educational programming, EPMH involves diverse audiences in exploring the varieties of human experience and encourages individuals to explore the past by reflecting on their own place in history.

What do people say about El Paso Museum of History in El Paso, Texas 79901?

  • Very nice and free history museum. A three-dollar donation is requested and is well worth it. There’s a very good history of the El Paso area, from ancient times to today. An excellent exhibit of Chicanos in El Paso brings to light their plight. In the rotating space, there is a display of photos taken at sunrise and sunset from the area. All in all, it was a very pleasant experience.
  • This museum is free! Very well-maintained exhibits and interesting topics. I expected more details about El Paso’s history and development. The topics on war and civil rights are all impressive. Worth the trip and time to tour through.
  • A fun experience that made me feel welcome. They had a sensory room and sensory lighting. It was so fun that even my 7-year-old had a good time. I want to go back for more.
  • Nice walk to the art museum and Alligator Plaza Park. I believe the Holocaust Museum is within walking distance, and probably one or two more. Electric bikes and scooters are to be had. The museum is child-friendly, and the alligators at the plaza love children. Whoops. Freudian slip. The children love alligators.
  • A good spot near San Jacinto Plaza for learning about the history of El Paso I find it interesting to see the Franklin Mountains in the background of the old photos and then see the same mountains today in the background of the modern city. Informative experience.
  • The El Paso History Museum is an amazing and cost-free experience. Though a three-dollar donation is suggested, the museum is more than worth it. You can explore the historical timeline of El Paso and learn about the experiences of Chicanos in the area.
