About Eclectic Menagerie Park in Houston, TX 77051

The Rubenstein family has always been interested in art, so it is not surprising that there is an open-air public museum on the edge of their 108-acre Houston pipe yard. Along the edge of the Rubensteins’ yard, where 288 South and Bellfort St. meet, there are many metal sculptures made by local and famous artists that the Rubensteins chose themselves.

Local artist, contractor, and designer Ron Lee and light metals artist Mark Rankin made many of these pieces. Mr. Lee has worked at Texas Pipe as a resident contractor, inventor, and sculptor for many years. Lee has been designing for almost 40 years and has done a lot of work with metals during that time. Ron spent a lot of his childhood in Idaho. He is certified in both nuclear pipe welding and rig welding. When asked how his love of art and welding went together, he said, “Artists are better welders, it’s up to you.”

Jerry Rubenstein, who was Chairman of the Board for Texas Pipe & Supply, bought a statue of a hippo from a store in El Campo, TX, and put it on the edge of the pipe yard many years ago. Shortly after that, a rhinoceros and then Snoopy showed up, and more art kept coming from there. Jerry is a real art lover, so he always wants the Eclectic Menagerie to have new and interesting art for people to look at.

What do people say about Eclectic Menagerie Park in Houston, Texas 77051?

  • A great place to stop, stretch your legs, and take some photos. A nice point of interest to visit when passing by, entering, or leaving Houston, especially if you appreciate anything art-related. Parking isn’t straightforward, being on the side of the South Fwy entrance ramp, but if you look at it on Google Maps satellite view, it’s very understandable.
  • There’s really no place to park, so you feel kind of weird and the grass is tall, unsure what wildlife you might encounter. If you can get by that, then the rest is a solid hour of pure joy. These works of art are amazing. It’s the best free thing to see in Houston!
  • A unique place to walk around for a few minutes. Directly off-highway and easy to park and get to. I’d say most people spend about 30 minutes there.
  • Very cool roadside attraction, great for photos, and stop by. There is no parking, but with precautions, you can stop by the side of the road to take some pictures.
  • This is such a unique place to visit! The creators of these sculptures are incredibly talented and creative. The only problem we had was that there wasn’t a parking lot or anywhere you could pull in and park. We just stopped alongside the road and hoped our car wouldn’t get hit. It’s definitely a cool experience, and I would recommend it. It’s a quick visit and worth stopping for.
  • Interesting artwork of various things made from scrap metal! If you like art of all kinds, check it out. Know that this place is literally right next to the onramp, and there is not really anywhere to park other than the onramp shoulder. If you do stop, you’ll get some cool pictures.…
