About Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site in El Paso, TX 79938

Hueco Tanks is an area of small mountains and a historical site in the U.S. state of Texas. It is between the Franklin Mountains to the west and the Hueco Mountains to the east. It is in a high-altitude desert basin. The Spanish word “hueco” means “holes,” and it refers to the many depressions in boulders and rock faces that hold water. Because the location has a distinctive collection of historical artifacts, plants, and animals, Texas law protects it. It is illegal to take them away, change them, or destroy them.

The historic site is about 32 miles (51 km) northeast of the center of El Paso, Texas. You can get there by turning at RM 2775 on Montana Avenue (U.S. Route 62/U.S. Route 180) in El Paso. The park is made up of three syenite mountains, which are a weak form of granite. It is 860 acres (350 ha) in size and is a popular place to do things like watch birds and boulders. It is important to the culture and spirituality of many Native Americans. The pictographs (rock paintings), many of which are thousands of years old and are present all over the area, demonstrate some of this importance.

What do people say about Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site in El Paso, Texas 79938?

  • It’s probably one of the best hikes I’ve been on. We did the self-guided trail. I enjoyed the caves and how nice and cool it was when we were able to get in the shade. This hole is great for beginners. We did the chain trail, which was challenging but not too hard. The trail we took does not allow dogs; I believe the flatter trails allow dogs. This was a great family experience. I thought it was cool that I saw some rock climbers; there are plenty of spots to do that! The man who walked us through the map was amazing! He was very informative.
  • Excellent park. If you want to learn more about the history of the area and the ancient people, take an interpretive tour. It’s five dollars a person, and they limit the groups to 10 people. Book early, as the park sells out of RV spaces.
  • Rock climbing, hiking, scrambling, guided tours, and amazing history await! I recommend making reservations in advance, as the park sets a limit on the number of visitors each day. If you want to visit protected areas of the state park, sign up for a guided tour (they are all awesome!).
  • This is an incredible park as well as a breathtaking campground. Most of the spots back up to the mountains and have a view of the valley in the distance. Check-in was easy. Anyone who wishes to hike in the park has to take a 30-minute class. Phil explains to us how to stay on trails and to protect the pictographs that are throughout the park. nice bathhouse and helpful staff.
  • Such a neat experience! You can explore at your own discretion, as long as you follow the safety rules!
